Believe it or not, most people are not wearing the correct color when it comes to their foundation. It’s too light or too dark, or too cool or too warm. That being said, there may not even be a perfect match for you. In other words, you may have to mix 2 or more foundation to get the perfect base. That’s what I do, even for my day to day foundation color.
There are several steps to take when trying to find the perfect color match:
- Swatch against your jawline. This area is the best match, as it is a mix between the rest of your face and your neck. Most of us have a shade or so difference between our face and neck. The best thing is to find a middle ground, and that is usually our jawline.
- Undertones – decide whether you have warm, cool or neutral undertones:
- Warm – you have warm undertones if:
- Your veins appear green
- Gold jewelry looks better against your skin than silver
- You tan easily without burning (this is subjective).
- Your skin has more of a yellow tone
- Cool – you have cool undertones if:
- Your veins appear blue
- Silver jewelry looks better against your skin than gold
- You tend to burn or turn pink in the sun
- Your skin has more of a pink or rosy tinge
- Neutral – if you have a little bit of both warm and cool tones (as described above), then you rock both and are a bit of a unicorn!
- Warm – you have warm undertones if:
- Daylight – always try on your foundation in natural day light. A lot of times, we try on our foundation colors at a store with unnatural, harsh lighting. Then, we head outside and the color looks completely different and mask-like in natural light.
Now you have the steps on how to color match your foundation like a pro. Makeup should not be complicated!
