Have you ever gone to Sephora or Ulta for a makeup brush (thinking it will take a few minutes and you’ll be in and out) and then ended up spending hours trying to find one, because there were so many options? Yes? Well, relax, we will have a series of topics in the upcoming weeks on makeup brushes and how to shop for one.
Today, we’re going to focus on foundation brushes. When applying my own foundation, unless I’m attending a special event, I tend to use my fingers. Why? Because, I use sheer liquid foundation on a daily basis…unless I’m sitting at home such as these days due to the pandemic, in which case I just do a daily skin routine and call it a day.
Back to the topic at hand. You will find all sorts of foundation brushes available. The question is, which one should you use? Lets take a look at some of my favorite types of foundation brushes.
My Favorite Foundation Brushes
- Stippling Brush – this is a duo fiber brush, and allows for the foundation to be stippled all over the face, while focusing on problem areas (such as scars or rough skin). When done, then you blend (lightly) with a sponge, such as the beauty blender, to smooth out the foundation.
- Flat Foundation Brush – this is a flat, dome shaped brush. It allows for foundation to be quickly applied to large areas of the face. As above, blend with a sponge when done.
- Buff Brush – just likes its name, this brush is used to buff out foundation. I use this sometimes instead of a sponge, to buff out the foundation if too much product is on the skin. It is especially useful for powder foundation.
I have said this in the past, but brushes are to the discretion of the user. I might use a brush for foundation, but someone else may use it as a concealer brush. Brushes are very versatile. At the end of the day, we use brushes to give us the results that we want. No matter what the brush is labeled as, use it anyway you like!
