Here is the age old question, does our blush and lipstick need to match? Yes and no! Haha, confused yet?
Think of it this way, your lipstick and blush should be from the same color family. For instance, if your lipcolor is from the deep red family (red, burgundy, merlot, pink, etc), then your blush should be from the same family. You can certainly wear red lips with a pink blush.
On the other hand, you can wear a deep red lipcolor with a peach blush, as long as the undertones match. What are undertones? Each shade in makeup has a cool or warm undertone. We have red lipsticks with cool undertones as well as warm undertones. When I apply makeup on my clients, I tend to look at the overall face, and then add a hint of blue or orange to the lipcolor based on the overall tone of the face.
Confused yet?
If I have a client who has a navy blue and gray smokey eye and wants a red lip, I would make sure that the red lipcolor that I have has cool undertones. If it looks like it clashes with the eyes, then it is a no-no. If that’s the case, I add a bit of blue pigment to the lipcolor (I always mix my lipcolors to customize for my clients) – this blue pigment will gear the red lipcolor to the perfect match for the blue/gray smokey eye.
So, at the end, your blush and lipstick does not need to be an exact match, but the undertones should match.
