In a world where social media is booming, there are so many choices out there so how do you know which artist is right for you? And furthermore, how do you save time and headache without 455 makeup trials? Today I am teaching you how to find the perfect makeup artist for you and how to communicate your ideal makeup style.
The first thing that you need to do is to look through the online portfolios of artists, and look for the following:
- Skin tone – make sure that the makeup artist has done makeup on those with similar skin tone as you. If you have a darker skin tone, I cannot stress enough how important this is. I’ve seen too many dark skin beauties with ashy skin because the makeup artist did not know how to match their skin tone.
- Makeup Style – if you’re looking for a soft, subdued look but the artist’s portfolio has ultra glam looks on nearly every face, then the artist may not be for you. Same goes the other way around – if you’re looking for a cut-crease eye but your artist only has natural looks on their portfolio, then lkee
Once you’ve narrowed down your list and ensured that your date is still available with these artists, it’s time for the makeup trial. Most artists will send you a prep list prior to the trial. To be extra ready, though, try to do the following:
Inspiration Photos
Have a few inspiration photos ready. Make sure that the hair color and skin tone is similar to yours.
Too Many Photos
Don’t have too many photos, as it can be confusing – especially if each photo is a complete separate look.
Your Own Photo
Show your artist a photo of what you normally look like when getting done up for a special event.
Skin Routine
Talk about your skin and your normal skin routine. This is essential. If you do not have a skin routine, ask for recommendations or speak to your dermatologist.
What You Don’t Like
Discuss what you do not like. If you don’t like bottom liner on your waterline, let us know. Not a fan of heavy contour or red lipstick? Tell me.
Trial Outfit
Wear a top that is similar in color to your wedding day outfit; whether it is red, white, pink, etc.
Hair Trials
If you’re also getting a hair trial done, know the following:
- How should the front of your hair look?
- Do you want a part? Or brushed back?
- How should the back of your hair look?
- How high of a bump do you want?
- If curls are in your ask, what kind of curls do you want?
- How should the front of your hair look?
Time of Day
Schedule your trial earlier in the day, if possible, so that you can see how your makeup and/or hair lasts throughout the day.
Photos
Make sure to take many photos, even hours later, to see how the makeup appears in photos.
Feedback
Write a list of any issues that occur over the next few hours. Also, if there’s anything that you don’t like or want to change, keep it on a list. Feedback is very, very important. Even if you don’t end up booking the same artist for your wedding day, the artist will appreciate your feedback, no matter how awkward it may be.
