For most of my younger life, during the pre-pandemic times and beyond, I was pro-foundation and concealer all the way. I started experimenting with foundation back in the early 90s when I was a teenager. Back then, it was all about cakeface, haha! However, as time went on, my makeup skills grew and cakeface looks’ minimized. Yet, I still wore foundation and concealer, as it’s what we have been told as a society as well as makeup school.
I was always on the go, and rarely would you see me without any makeup. Alas, the pandemic began, and my outings stopped. For months on end, we were home – with only trips to the grocery store in our masks as our highlight of the week. Because of that, I stopped wearing foundation on a daily basis – ladies, this is the first time since I was a teenager that I went more than a day or two without makeup.
Then, as stores started reopening and the mask policy strictly in place, what do I do to make myself look fresh and sort of done up? I wore concealer only! I concealed my under eye area that you can see, and any spots that needed coverup. Granted, I didn’t go nuts, I tried to thin it out. The first time I did this (wearing only concealer), all the dullness of no makeup went away. My skin brightened up and I looked and felt like a new person.
Now, as time went on, I started wearing foundation again – to events like weddings and dinners. I learned during this time, with full face foundation, that I did NOT need concealer. As a matter of fact, concealer looked too glam for me once I had foundation on. Luckily, I don’t have much discoloration on my face or acne that needs covering up, so foundation by itself works for me when I’m doing a full face of makeup. Concealer by itself works for me when I’m just looking to spice up my eye area while running a small errand.
Based on my analysis, I think you can just wear one instead of both. Foundation only when you want to do a full even skin of makeup. Concealer only when you need to conceal certain areas, while the rest of your skin is good to go. If you want to do both, that works too, especially if you’re going for a full glam look.
