Concealer or foundation first? That is the question! Almost like ‘to be or not to be’ – the younger generation may not remember this saying from the 80s/90s! I personally like concealer first, especially if you’re going for the minimally there complexion. With concealer first, you would then just apply foundation where you need it. You won’t need to apply it where the concealer is, as that would be doing double the work, and more of a chance of cakeyness.
The Art of Concealer First
Always start with prepping your skin. This means, serum, moisturizer, eye cream. Then, take a good look at your skin. Does anything need to be color corrected? If so, color correct first. Look for areas that need to be concealed, such as acne or under the eyes. Apply concealer to the needed areas (remember to stipple on the color corrected areas). Smooth it out with a sponge. Then, apply foundation, not really on the concealed areas – but on the areas that do not have any concealer. You can then blend it together with a sponge or brush.
The Art of Foundation First
There are times where you want full glam coverage. In this case, foundation before concealer works best. Start with prepping your skin, to make it ready for makeup. Then, apply foundation all over – make sure to get into every nook and cranny. Before I started doing makeup professionally, I only applied foundation to my cheeks – I never applied it to my t-zone. I look back at the photos from my early 20s and cringe! After you apply the foundation, conceal where you need to. If you need to color correct, I recommend to do so before you apply foundation. Once you are done, smooth over with a sponge and apply powder and setting spray.
Note that this is the way I do makeup; this is an age old question that has multiple answers and there really is no right or wrong answer on whether foundation or concealer goes on first.
